Healthy Sisters’ Soup & Bean Works, Rochester, NY
Healthy Sisters’ Soup & Bean Works responds to the needs of women facing overwhelming obstacles to lifestyle changes without resources or family support by providing skills for employment and life in a nurturing workspace.
Healthy Sisters’ Soup & Bean Works is a program of Catholic Family Center’s Workforce Development Department located in Rochester, NY. The program provides participant with a safe, accepting work environment where she can learn to identify and build upon her talents while building the skills necessary to obtain and maintain mainstream employment. Products created by the participants include, gourmet bean soups, chili, dip & salsa mixes and rice mixes as well as gift baskets.
Since the project was launched in 1996, more than half of the participants have found full-time employment or enrolled in school. Healthy Sisters’ Soup & Bean Works is one of only three similar programs in the entire nation. It’s an innovative work experience program where women earn a steady paycheck, develop self-confidence and learn job skills needed to enter or re-enter the workforce. Participants are involved in all aspects of the business from production, quality assurance, marketing and inventory control. The program experience is a tangible and a powerful boost to the development of a woman’s confidence in her own ability to support herself and her children.
