Divine Chocolate, Ghana
Divine Chocolate is a leading fair trade brand in the UK & US and a pioneer in the world of socially responsible enterprise. The Kuapa Kokoo farmer’s cooperative in Ghana owns shares in Divine Chocolate and influences decisions about how Divine Chocolate is produced and sold. Its success means that farmers have a secure source of Fair Trade income that continues to grow year on year.
Theft by clerks that rig scales and cheat farmers out of the full value of their crop is common in cocoa farming. Kuapa Kokoo puts power in the hands of farmers by making sure that each village has its own scale and its own elected clerk or village recorder. Through its commitment to fair trade and sale of cocoa to the fair trade market, Kuapa Kokoo returns greater benefits to cocoa farmer.
Today, the Kuapa Kokoo cooperative represents 45,000 cocoa farmers and invests part of its fair wages to building schools, digging wells for clean drinking water for villages, providing mobile medical clinics for remote farmers, and fostering women’s income generation projects which allow women to earn additional income for their families when the cocoa season is over.
